Facial FAQs

What exactly is a facial?

A facial is a relaxing treatment that pampers your skin with a cleanse, exfoliation, a good massage and then a mask, serums, moisturisers and SPF (if the sun is still out when you have your appointment). Treatments like reflexology and lymphatic drainage detox facials can actually help with certain issues (reflexology facials are great for stress, anxiety, migraines and headaches, and lymphatic drainage facials are amazing for giving your system a good spring clean and de-puffing the face) and are massage focused.

What are the benefits of facials for my skin?

Facials don’t just reduce stress and anxiety, they have a number of benefits for your skin too. A good facial will deeply, but gently, cleanse your skin, leaving it nice and clean. Facial massage promotes improves circulation to the face, which in turn means that your skin will be getting lots of oxygen and nutrients, which equals healthier skin and a glowing complexion. Facials can also help rejuvenate your skin and improve its texture, which is great for us as we age. Alongside advice from your dermatologist or doctor, facials can help to clear acne over time.

What can’t a facial do?

Let’s be realistic, a facial is never going to be a replacement for surgical procedures or ‘tweakments’ like botox and fillers. There are some facials that offer an alternative to botox for those who prefer not to go down the route of a needle, but this treatment will not have the same effect as botox because it does not in any way penetrate the skin and freeze the muscles to prevent deep wrinkles. With these kind of facials, one is not going to have much effect, they need to be done on a regular basis to see results.

Do you have vegan skincare available for facials?

Yes. I have vegan skincare products available for anyone who wishes me to use them in their facial, please just let me know at the time of booking.

How often should I have a facial?

You can have a facial as often as you want to. If you are having them to help treat a specific issue, then we can agree the frequency together, which usually starts with every week to ten days and then gradually decreases over time. I would say one facial per month is good if you do not have any serious skin issues.

How fast will I see results?

For most people, they see a more a glow complexion immediately after their facial treatment. If a specific issue is being treated, then results will depend on each individual and also whether you have followed the aftercare advice between treatments.

Do facials cause breakouts?

Sometimes! This rare, but it does happen. For this reason, I would never recommend a facial the day before a big event like a wedding. The massage techniques in facials can cause the skin to purge itself as it heals an area of congestion, meaning you might get a breakout. Sometimes your skin needs to get a little bad to get better.

Will you match your skincare products to my skin type?

Yes. At the start of your facial I will look at your skin under very strong lights so that I can see it in all its glory. Don’t be scared, I will never judge you, I am here to help you improve your skin and would never think badly of it. I will ask you some questions about your skin too and have a feel of it to determine your skin type and the optimal products for it.

Can I fall asleep during my facial?

I challenge you not to fall asleep during your facial! Most people really relax and often fall asleep. You don’t have to, you can talk to me if you want to. The point is that the treatment time belongs to you for you to relax however you like. If that’s a chat, great, but if that’s falling asleep then that’s great too.

Do I need to undress for my facial?

No, although I do usually give a shoulder massage while your mask is on, so most people prefer to take their top off for this. Your chest will always be covered with a large, snuggly towel though, so your modesty is preserved.

Are there toilets/hand-washing facilities?

Yes. There is a bathroom right next to the treatment room, which you are welcome to use.

Do I need to bring a towel?

No. All towels are provided, as well as slippers if you want a pair (just ask me).

What is included in the treatment time?

Your treatment time includes your facial and time to consult with me on your needs. I do allow five to ten minutes extra for you to get undressed and dressed, but if you are more than five to ten minutes late then this will eat into your treatment time.

Should I arrive early for my facial?

No. I allow you some extra time to get undressed and dressed, so please do not arrive early for your facial to avoid clashing with the client before you.

What should I do after my facial?

Drink lots of water to help flush out any toxins that have been removed by the massage (this is especially important after lymphatic detox facials). Avoid excess sweating for 24 hours, as this can cause the skin to be overstimulated. Avoid exfoliation for at least 48 hours after a facial, as this can be too abrasive for the skin after having been exfoliated during the facial.

Do I need to tip my therapist?

Tips are never expected at all, but always appreciated if you feel you want to leave one.

What is your cancellation policy?

The full fee for the treatment will be charged for any booking not cancelled within 24 hours.
